Prysmian BS 6724

What is BS 6724?

Prysmian BS 6724 is a Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSOH) armoured cable designed for the interconnections of systems as control cables or as power cables. BS 6724 can directly replace standard PVC sheathed BS 5467 armoured cables for applications where low smoke, zero halogen performance and reduced flame propagation is required.

Technical Specifications and Applications

Prysmian BS 6724 is typically used in internal and external LV power circuits in buildings where LSOH performance is required such as shopping centres or airports. SWA and AWA armouring supports installation routing on trays and ladders, in ducts and can be used in direct burial applications such as outdoor armoured cable.

  • Voltage rating: Typically 600/1000 V for low-voltage distribution; selected constructions may be available at 1900/3300 V.
  • Core configurations: Single core and multicore options (2, 3, 3.5, 4, 5 cores and others).
  • Conductor sizes: From 1.5 mm² up to large cross-sections for higher current demand.

BS 6724 Cable Construction

Prysmian BS 6724 features copper conductors, Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSOH) insulation, galvanised steel wire armour (SWA) for multicore or aluminium wire armour (AWA) for single core and an LSOH outer sheath.

When exposed to fire, PVC cables will produce dense black smoke, toxic fumes and acid gas. As a result, LSOH cables are often specified for indoor public areas including hospitals, shops, train stations and airport terminals where life safety is key.

Both the AWA and SWA armour provides impact protection for direct burial, trenching and installations subject to mechanical stress. It also offers a path for earth fault currents and adds tensile strength for smoother pulling during installation, making BS 6724 a reliable armoured electrical cable for both commercial and industrial projects where an armoured cable is preferred.

How can Prysmian support your installation?

Use Prysmian CableApp as your swa cable size calculator to determine the correct size BS 6724 cable for your project. Input route length, installation method, ambient conditions and design current to get your cable sizing suggestion, voltage drop and derating guidance based on current-carrying capacity data. Detailed datasheets, installation guides and compliance certificates are also available through our web catalogue, to support design, tendering and installation of outdoor armoured cable and indoor armoured electrical systems.
