System design and installation

You tell us how much power needs to be distributed where: We’ll sort it.

We not only manufacture the products, but we also design and support the entire system installation. From Geotechnical specialists to logistics planners, we have the expertise to design the most effective cable system for the route you need to take.

We’ll provide the civil engineering to get the cable drums to site. This can involve commissioning cranes, building temporary roads and all the empty drum management. We’ll arrange the excavation, including environmental aspects and safety.

Our skilled high voltage jointers will ensure the conductors and insulation meet the highest standards. When the system has the highest integrity we’ll conduct the high voltage commission testing from our own bespoke mobile testing equipment. It’s a wrap-around service managed and implemented by our local UK team.

It starts with the survey.

Our geotechnical and ecological specialists will be the first to review a planned cable route. High Voltage and Extra High Voltage systems will be designed to suit the geological conditions, and the most appropriate route will be mapped, taking into account both logistical challenges and environmental sensitivities.

Getting the specification and route right for each stage of the project will remove over-engineered systems and keep costs under control. Our cost analysis can also help determine the choice of conductor and insulation materials and Prysmian can produce cable with either aluminium or copper conductors as required.

Will the road bridge be wide enough for the cable drum? How will we build a temporary access road to reach the installation trenches? How and when will the cable arrive? Our support team will swing into action to deliver your project. We’ll work in partnership with your main contractor, co-ordinating road closures, managing temporary bridge construction and keeping on top of the programme to make sure everything is co-ordinated, and your project runs to time.

Where appropriate, Prysmian will act as the main contractor, employing sub-contractors for civil engineering or using our own civils team. We’re hugely flexible and have a comprehensive team of experts ready to solve any issues relating to the installation of underground power cables.

An energy grid is so much more than the cable. Prysmian manufacturers HV and EHV joints and terminations and also runs its own three-year long training programme for new jointers. Our team has the skill to provide jointing on site and has the experience to work with legacy fluid-filled cable systems where needed.

Once the system is installed, we can provide on-site high voltage commission testing to your specification with our high voltage resonance test trailers, capable of testing systems right up to 400 kV. We are also able to offer a wide range of ancillary testing services including partial discharge monitoring, high voltage DC testing, sheath continuity testing and fault-finding
