Prysmian BS 5467

What is BS 5467?

Prysmian BS 5467 is a low voltage armoured power cable and auxiliary control cable, with XLPE insulation. Prysmian BS 5467 is designed for industrial wiring, mains distribution and can be installed in areas at risk of mechanical damage. The BS 5467 range comprises 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7,12, 19, 27, and 37 cores and is well suited to industrial plants, commercial buildings and offers a dependable solution for power distribution and is a leading armoured cable choice for designers and installers seeking consistency and compliance.

BS 5467 Cable Construction

Prysmian BS 5467 is an armoured power cable with XLPE insulation, typical construction includes:

  • Conductors: Plain annealed copper, single core or multi-core, sized for the required current-carrying capacity.
  • Insulation: Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) for excellent thermal and dielectric properties.
  • Bedding (where applicable): A protective bedding layer to cushion the armour and preserve cable integrity.
  • Armour: Galvanised steel wire armour (SWA) for multi-core cables, or aluminium wire armour (AWA) for single-core cables to minimise magnetic effects.
  • Outer Sheath: Tough, UV resistant PVC outer sheath for improved durability.

The mechanical protection for Prysmian BS 5467 is provided by a galvanised steel wire armour, making the cable suitable for areas that are at risk of mechanical damage. The cable also features cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation which has a maximum working temperature of 90°C, allowing a higher current to run though the conductors when compared with PVC. BS 5467 contains Steel Wire Armour (SWA) for multi core cables and aluminium wire armour (AWA) for single-core cables which provides impact protection, making the cable suitable for direct burial and installation in harsh environments. This construction underpins outdoor cable applications and armoured electrical cable for outdoor use where stability and safety are essential.

Where can BS 5467 be used?

BS 5467 cables are widely used wherever dependable power distribution is essential. Typical applications include industrial facilities such as Manufacturing plants and also commercial buildings such as office blocks and retail complexes. BS 5467 can be used in fixed installations such as in trunking, cable trays, direct burial and in ducts. The armour also enables BS 5467 to be installed outdoors where additional protection is needed, such as sheds, home offices and other out buildings.

How can CableApp help with the installation of BS 5467?

To streamline specification, use Prysmian CableApp to calculate the correct BS 5467 cable size for your project. The app considers load, installation method, ambient conditions and voltage drop to provide standards-based recommendations for BS 5467 cable and swa armoured cable, helping you compare options, optimise design and document decisions from design through procurement. BS 5467 is currently the most calculated cable in our cable calculator, so you know you’re in safe hands.
