Embodied Carbon

What is EMBODIED CARBON?

Embodied carbon is the term used that quantifies the amount of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the construction, lifetime and demolition of a building or infrastructure project, including all its materials. This amount can be used further to determine the total Carbon Footprint of the building and account for all CO₂ and other greenhouse gas emissions associated throughout its lifetime including demolition and recycling.

The quantity itself is “embodied carbon dioxide equivalent” or “global warming potential” measured in kilograms of carbon dioxide.

Embodied carbon for cable quantifies the greenhouse gas emissions associated with manufacture of the cable right up to the factory gate. This includes excavation, transportation and processing of all its constituents such as copper, steel and XLPE also, the manufacturing processes such as insulation and armouring then final testing and packaging of the cable. It does not include greenhouse gases associated with the operation of the cable during its lifetime; embodied carbon is published by Prysmian is limited to the manufacture of a cable called scope 1,2 and 3.

Why do I need EMBODIED CARBON?

Construction clients increasingly require carbon footprint details for the whole lifetime of their new construction to help them proceed to net zero. Cables for Electrification and Digital Solutions feature prominently within buildings and plays a role in its efficiency. Engineers determine the carbon footprint of the building, and they need embodied carbon data for all components, including cables, to do this effectively.

What is the Prysmian solution for EMBODIED CARBON?

Prysmian cables have have been designed, manufactured and delivered in millions of metres and thousands of cable types for over a hundred years. This expertise covers data, telecom, energy cables and cable systems which are all essential components of the buildings and supporting infrastructure. The Prysmian integrated systems approach combines engineering, purchasing, manufacturing and quality functions to determine the exact embodied carbon dioxide equivalent for each construction cable we produce, for every step of its journey.

Prysmian publish carbon dioxide equivalent data in "kg eCO₂e" for our construction cables based upon ECOINVENT data and methodologies. These are, SCOPE 1-3 or ‘cradle to gate’. This allows your engineers to use all Prysmian construction cables and calculate a carbon footprint of your cable networks in a form suitable for the client and help them reach net zero.

How do I get Prysmian Group embodied carbon dioxide equivalent data?

Prysmian embodied carbon dioxide equivalent data increasingly available for standard building cables, including all low voltage armoured cables, low smoke zero halogen cables and all fire resistant cables (FP cables). We calculate each permutation of conductor sizes and core combination for every cable type and produce them on our datasheets, located ONLY on uk.prysmian.com.

Just visit Home (prysmian.com) to access all current Prysmian cable datasheets.

What if Prysmian embodied carbon dioxide equivalent data is not published?

Should your project require carbon dioxide equivalent data for other cables please ‘contact us’ through our website to discuss your requirements and we can get to a solution.
