Prysmian will develop the power links for the Walney Offshore Wind Farm, in the Irish Sea
The new € 18 million contract follows the € 24.5 million one for the first phase of the project and confirms <br /> the dynamism in the renewable energy sector
Prysmian, a worldwide leading Group in the sector of cables and systems for energy and telecommunications, has been awarded a € 18 million contract by the Danish utility DONG Energy to supply a complete 132 kV export cable system for the second phase of the Walney Offshore Wind Farm project, in the Irish Sea. This project is expected to be completed by summer 2011.
The second phase of the Walney project consists of the expansion of the existing wind farm structure through the construction of 51 new turbines, which will generate an extra 183 MW of power. In particular, Prysmian is involved in the design and supply of a submarine and land cable system, which will connect the offshore wind farm to the mainland power grid. The submarine cables will be manufactured at the Prysmian submarine cables factory based in Arco Felice, Italy, and the land cables at the factory in Wrexham, Great Britain.
This new contract follows the € 24.5 M one for the supply of export cables for the first phase of the same project. It further confirms the validity of Prysmian’s know-how and technology for the fast growing renewable energy market, and the Group commitment to support offshore and on-land wind farm operators throughout the world.
Prysmian has developed a wide range of products and technologies for the wind energy sector, both for the connection of the energy production parks to the transmission and distribution networks, and for the operation of the wind turbines. The Group is currently involved in other important projects in order to develop some of the world’s largest offshore wind farms, such as the Ormonde, the Gunfleet and the Greater Gabbard in the UK, the Thanet in the North Sea, and the Alpha Ventus in Germany.
