What is Prysmian All Ground?

All-Ground® is an innovative cable solution designed to overcome the constraints of laying cables in low and medium voltage cable installation networks. The All Ground cable solution enables safer, faster, and more cost-effective medium voltage cable installation in demanding environments where traditional methods are difficult or expensive to implement.

In all such installations, the question often arises: does cable need to be grounded? For low and medium voltage power networks, the answer is yes. Cables must be properly earthed according to ensure safety for both people and equipment. All-Ground® is designed to be used within such grounded systems, with the metallic screens or armour (when present) connected to earth as specified in the project design and relevant regulations.

How easy is All Ground to install?

A thermoplastic–elastomer base material offers natural strippability, allowing easy cable preparation with the same bending radius as standardised cables. This makes All Ground particularly well suited for streamlined medium voltage cable installation in both new projects and network upgrades. The grooved shape is easy to mount in a trefoil disposition, ensuring it can be handled quickly and safely on site.

When planning how to lay a cable in the ground, these features simplify on-site work: the cable can be bent, stripped, and positioned in the trench using standard tools and familiar procedures, while still complying with grounding and safety requirements.

Project Developer will obtain savings through:

By adopting an All Ground cable solution for low and medium voltage cable installation, savings can be achieved at multiple stages of the project lifecycle, from civil works to logistics and long-term operation:

  1. Cost and transport on site of soft sand
  2. Clearing and tipping of the excavated soil
  3. No filling material control
  4. Reducing trench dimensions (depth and width)

These savings are particularly visible on large-scale infrastructure and renewable energy projects, where long lengths of grounded cable and extensive trenching are required. Using All Ground allows native soil to be reused, reducing the number of truck movements and on-site handling operations.

Environmentally Friendly

Non heavy metals containing, flame-retardant and naturally resistant to termites, All-Ground® avoids the use of repellents or metallic barriers that are harmful to the environment. The All Ground cable solution supports sustainable project design by limiting the use of additional protective layers and chemical treatments. This approach aligns with stricter environmental regulations and corporate sustainability targets, while still meeting grounding and safety requirements.

Reducing carbon footprint

1

Uses native soil

2

No need to add soft sand or spoil

3

Reduced site traffic

Cables can be buried directly, without additional sand bedding nor controlled filling material, which streamlines construction sites and helps to protect the environment, reducing the carbon footprint.

By minimising transport and handling of external materials, All Ground directly contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with civil works. When combined with efficient medium voltage cable installation practices and correctly grounded networks, it becomes a key lever for reducing the overall environmental impact of energy infrastructure projects.

Sandy soil and Rocky ground

XZ1(S) 1x240 mm² AL vs All Ground 1x240 AL > 0.6/1 kV to 1.8/3 kV total costs – cable + installation – considering 50 MW plants and 25 km trench. The comparison clearly highlights how an All Ground cable solution can reduce project budgets by simplifying trench design and lowering installation complexity.

Specifically recommended in:

  • Locations where sand is scarce or its transport to the job site is very expensive
  • Locations with hostile climate where rain or wind can carry the sand away
  • Locations where the terrain is not too rocky and allows re-use of the trench material to cover directly without additional treated sand

In these conditions, All Ground ensures reliable performance and mechanical protection without relying on imported sand or specialised backfill. This makes it particularly attractive for remote sites, large solar or wind farms, and any project where optimising medium voltage cable installation costs is a priority.
