Testing high voltage systems

A unique range of equipment and expertise for testing

Power transmission and distribution systems will be highly engineered and meticulously planned. Their long-term reliability will rely on the quality of each element but also on the quality of the system design and installation. Both the products and the complete system need rigorous testing. The global centre of excellence for type testing high voltage cables and systems within Prysmian is situated right here in the UK at our Eastleigh factory. Commission testing needs to be carried out on site and for this purpose, Prysmian has a fleet of HV resonance test trailers taking high voltage testing to where it is needed.

Commission and maintenance testing

High voltage commission tests will be required when a system installation is completed. Our mobile high voltage testing equipment will test to the client’s own requirements. Our units can test up to 400kV and we have the capacity to mobilise multiple test teams at any one time, anywhere in the UK. If necessary, we can also call on additional capacity from our fleet in Europe. In addition to commission testing, the teams will conduct tests as part of repair, diagnostics or routine network maintenance, when testing is performed in order to avoid a fault in the future.

Specific testing services include:

High Voltage Testing
• High voltage DC testing at voltages from10 kV to 400 kV.
• High voltage AC testing at voltages up to 310 kV.
• Partial discharge monitoring of terminations and joints while energised

• Online partial discharge monitoring of circuits on load.

Low Voltage Testing and DC Testing
• DC conductor resistance tests.
• Sheath resistance and continuity checks.
• Contact resistance measurement.
• Serving (oversheath) testing.
• Oversheath fault location.
• Insulation resistance measurement.
• Cable sheath voltage limiter (tests for correct operation up to 15 kV).
• Cable cross bonding verification checks.

High voltage product testing

Opened in 2014 by the Prime Minister, the high voltage testing laboratory is located at our Eastleigh site. A huge investment for Prysmian, this laboratory analyses land and subsea cables designed for installations around the world. Each test represents a multimillion-pound investment, reflecting the scale and strategic importance of the products being examined. A number of tests are conducted and each may last for months or years to ensure the lifetime operation can be guaranteed and the laboratory remains the centre of excellence for high voltage testing within Prysmian.
